The JumpStart Lab targets young South Africans from previously disadvantaged communities to empower them with the necessary skills to participate in the South African knowledge economy with relevant and practical skills. JumpStart’s main modus operandi is tying together the value chain of Education, Mentorship and Industry deployment. These three links in the empowerment chain are key and are tightly interdependent. By way of illustration, Education is not isolated from the practical skills actually required in the industry. Industry is also not expected to absorb purely academic education without quality assured practical mentorship. Therefore, the JumpStart programme ties commercial and sustainable business into targeted education and managed mentorship. The phrases “sustainable” , “targeted education” and “managed mentorship” differentiate the JumpStart programme and protect it from being disconnected from the actual market demand and growth sectors. In this way, for example, it is different from running an isolated “training programme”, or “on the job mentoring programme” or the like.
TSC's JumpStart program has had success in the IT Professional Services sector since 2000 with an average of 25 learners per year and a high percentage of graduates successfully placed into the industry.
